Insurance Policy & Coverage Searches
The defendant's policy limits usually determine the value of the case. We establish whether coverage exists, what it is, and whether there is an umbrella layer sitting above it — before you advise a client to accept a number.
What we search
Policy existence
Whether a policy was in force covering a given party at the time of a loss. The threshold question in any matter where the defendant claims to be uninsured, or where the carrier has not been identified.
Policy limits
The per-occurrence and aggregate limits available. This is the number that determines whether a case settles at policy or goes to verdict, and it is the one most often taken on faith from opposing counsel.
Policy number
Identification of the specific policy for use in a claim, a demand, or a declaratory action.
Umbrella and excess coverage
The layer most often missed. A defendant with a $250,000 auto policy and a $2,000,000 umbrella is a materially different case. We locate the excess and umbrella coverage sitting above the primary policy.
Priced by the age of the loss
Older losses take more work, so they cost more — but the price is published either way, and you know it before you authorize. Policy limits searches carry no no-hit fee at all: if we don't find the limits, there is no charge.

When counsel orders a coverage search
- Before accepting a policy-limits offer. Verify the stated limits are the actual limits, and that no excess layer exists above them.
- Pre-suit evaluation. Decide whether a case is worth filing when the defendant's assets are thin but coverage may not be.
- Uninsured and underinsured claims. Establish whether coverage existed at the time of loss when the defendant says it didn't.
- Wrongful death and catastrophic injury. Where the umbrella layer is the difference between a partial and a full recovery.
- Subrogation. Identify the responsible carrier and the coverage available to recover against.
Permissible purpose applies here too
Coverage searches are conducted for parties with a legitimate claim or interest — pending or contemplated litigation, a claim in progress, or a subrogation interest. We document that basis at intake like every other search. Our standards.
Don't settle against a number you haven't verified.
Coverage searches start at $150. Open an account and run one.
